  • 1.  Where to find reliable artists to build models?

    Posted 12-17-2015 08:56 AM

I was given the job of finding an artist to build some models for an upcoming exhibit but I am finding it difficult to find the right someone.  There are some great studios that do large scale work, but the things I am looking for are small scale and detailed,  the larger studios are not as intimate as I would prefer. We are looking for a person that can build models of plants, animals and land-forms. Is there a website that reviews the type of artist that you can work with one-on-one?   Or better yet, how do you folks find artists to build small scaled, highly accurate models?

Do you have a local model railroad club?  Those folks are used to making scale models with lots of detail and to manufacturing things themselves to make their models "just right."  While not professional artists, they might be interested in a new challenge and willing to work with you, or they might know some other connections in your area who could help you out.  Miniature makers tend to gravitate towards each other.

    Hello, Aaron-

I may be able to help you.  I'm an independent artist specializing in natural history exhibit features.  I have an attention to detail bordering on obsessive, and enjoy the challenges of replicating natural objects.  I'll message you with my contact info.

        Cheers,

           Michael

There has been quite a few great responses to the question of "finding reliable artists". More are needed. However---  While having a collection of people you can email up at anytime is a valuable tool, I wonder if there is a source for finding specific people?   Is there a Website, or a space of some kind that artists advertise their specialties?  Besides the AAM Marketplace, does anyone know of a go-to-source that artist advertise???

Thanks All--- Betty Brennan, Michael Holland, Alicia Goode, Walking Stick Studio, Taylor Studios, Mark Borow, Prop Art in New York are bookmarked in my folder (and probably others now too)

    Aaron,

I'm sorry I don't have an organization website. However, these three people come to mind--all freelancers and are not part of a huge studio--they might know if the kind of website you are looking for exists. I met them as part of Excellent Judges--a Los Angeles based exhibit design evaluation group.  Ann Marshall and Karina White are the founders of the group. Below is their contact information.

    1. Ann Marshall, principle of AnEx Designs.

    2.  Karina White has worked at the Huntington Gardens a botanical garden and museum and is a former museum educator--understands how the visitor--will experience the exhibit.

    3.  Bill Dambrova because he done work for many natural hIstory museums.

I hope one of these can help.

    Hello Mr. Delehanty,
My company also offers small-scale models and dioramas, as well as consulting on how to show your subject in the most interesting light. I waited to see if any museum folks would help you with a clearing-house site for specialists like me, but none offered any you didn’t already know of. There is one more, but you probably already know of it as well. It is the Products and Services Guide from the Official Museum Directory, which is actually separate from Museum Marketplace. It has even fewer listings for models and dioramas than the Museum Marketplace, but it has other listings, such as fabrication, that may lead you to someone.

The suggestion of a local model railroad club could work, but you have to be careful, because avocational model makers are not generally accustomed to meeting deadlines, and they have a huge range of skill levels. You may get a really good model maker, but you have to be sure he understands how important accuracy in the plants, animals and rock formations is. Otherwise, he may do something that is pretty good, but not authentic to your subject.

Our firm does mostly historical model work, but we have also done a fair amount of natural history work. If I understand you correctly, you are looking to build miniatures, not just small dioramas in full scale. That is something we do very well. Please see our website and click on “Gallery” to see the sort of work we do. We are in the Washington, DC area, but we can ship anywhere UPS or Federal Express goes. Best of luck in your search!

    Thank you Mr. Pallansch,

there-in lies the hitch---accuracy....  a lot of model-makers will plop whatever tree or bush that they can buy online from a hobby store.  What they may not realize is that a maple tree might not grow on the hills of Timbuktu.

Thanks for adding to the conversation, and the information regarding Products and Services Guide from the Official Museum Directory.
