  • 1.  What Platform Hosts your Museum's Webpage?

    Posted 11-12-2015 03:16 PM

    Hi all!

My museum currently uses Joombla! to host our website, but has run into issues lately with security. Because of this, we are looking into using a new platform to host our website - one that will allow us to easily change and update information as needed (without learning a great deal of code - we are not programmers by any means!). We would also like to sell museum shop merchandise through the website, if possible.

Thanks for any help you may be able to give!

    Hi Alyssa,

We recently went through an overhaul and relaunch of our website and decided to use the Wordpress platform to build and develop our site. If your staff isn't coders or web developers, Wordpress (.org, not .com - there is a difference!) is a great option. You can find relatively cheap already-created themes and templates and import your content directly into it. Some Wordpress themes, depending on where you look, support e-commerce as well. Alternatively, if you use Square or can use Square, Squarespace is a great platform for hosting a website, and it has e-commerce built in.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi Sarah,

Thank you so much for your answer! I appreciate it. I've heard a lot of great things about Wordpress, but hadn't looked into it yet. I'm glad you mentioned it, and also that it is a .org and not the .com version!

    Best,

Our museum just had a Wordpress site created and it's so much butter than the old one. We went from a drab, over cluttered, and outdated website to one that's sleek, simple and actually easy to navigate. We have had a couple problems sorting out some kinks, but overall, it has been a great improvement.

    Hi Alyssa:

To clarify, are you looking for a new Content Management System (CMS) and/or Hosting?

A Content Management System is the software that you can use to actually build your website such as Wordpress, Joomla, or Squarespace.

Hosting is where the site actually "lives." It's where all the files in your website are stored. Hosts include Media Temple (mentioned below) and Bluehost.

Some CMS's also offer hosting, so, Joomla may indeed be your host. If your immediate issue is security, moving your site to a new Host might help in the short term, rather then revamping your entire site, which looks quite elaborate. Most Hosts offer to bring your site over for a small fee.

Hope that helps rather then totally confuse you! Feel free to email me off-list with any follow-up questions.

    Hello Ms. DePlonty,

We have had very good luck with Media Temple. They are very helpful and offer live chat all the time. They also have a very clean, easy to navigate website that is gloriously devoid of advertisements. They also have how-to pages in the section called "community".

    Hi Mr. Pallansch,

Interesting! I have never heard of Media Temple, but I will definitely check it out. Thank you!

    Alyssa,

As others in this thread have stated, Wordpress is a good solution for what you are trying to do. One of the other major Content Management Systems that is used widely by museums is Drupal. If you are looking to do this site update quickly, I would probably hold off on Drupal though. They are in the process of launching a new version and it will be a while before that version gets to what I would deem production ready (let others find the bugs first).

Wordpress is what I would recommend and I think that it would meet the needs you have outlined.

If you have any questions I would be happy to discuss further.

We too use Wordpress -I agree with Sarah that its user friendly, for us non-tech people that do some of the posting. We have a contract web host and designer, and on staff, a graphic designer that does some of the more technical things. Staff is able to post info into the existing templates though.
