We are designing a renovation expansion with emphasis on the need for walk-in hands-on art creation and learning opportunities for visitors. Seeking success stories for walk-in interactive art learning areas for children and adults - a project you've done, or a great museum you've visited. Thanks! ------------------------------------------- Grace Robinson Executive Director Gadsden Arts Center Quincy FL -------------------------------------------

    Hi Grace-

I'm interested in hearing what others have done as well.  Our art collection is one of our selling points, and I would love to do more programming around it.  I am very intrigued by this idea of the walk-in, hands-on art creation, so I can't wait to see some of the comments.

    Thanks for posting!

The Denver Art Museum has a great track record, and have written up a lot of their experiences:  http://www.denverartmuseum.org/about/research-reports

My museum has a very large and heavily used education space.  It is an interactive space with history of our museum, an art timeline and a lot of other interactives that connect to our permanent collection.  It caters to adults and children--- of course it is so hard to overcome the stigma of it being the "kids area" of the museum.  Our hands on space is 10 years old and we are looking to renovate in the next few years.   Here is a link to it : http://www.cummermuseum.org/visit/education#art-connections

Also, another interactive that is extremely successful is a kiosk that we have in an area of the museum adjacent to our historical gardens.  It is a cart that has plastic boxes housing a watercolor set, small bottle of water, watercolor paper, and a small clipboard.  Our visitors are encouraged to borrow a box and paint in the garden.  The kiosk also houses plastic bags that the visitor can put their creation in to take home with them.  When they are done, they return the box to the kiosk.  We are able to fund the supplies through corporate donors.
