  • 1.  Headquarter buildings with History

    Hello everyone,

I'm looking for examples of corporate or foundation world headquarter buildings or foundation that do a good job of incorporating and communicating the companies history into aspects of the building. For example, displays, digital mediums, an actual exhibit space, or even something dynamic that you saw when you entered a building.

    I appreciate your help.

    Cindy

    Hi Cindy,

We worked on a corporate history exhibition for the Carnegie Corporation, (their foundation headquarters) in New York City in 2013. The project included display cases and videos, which we produced. The exhibition was designed for a wide corridor leading from the reception area to the board room. If you're interested in learning more I can put you in touch with the person in charge of the project.

    Best,

    Hi Cindy:

A few greats come to mind:

Hallmark, Coca-cola, Carlson Companies, Miller Beer, Harley Davidson

    Good luck!

Check out the Longaberger Company headquarters building in Dresden, Ohio.
The basket company's building is a five-story picnic basket - right down to
    the upraised handles.

    Hi Cindy,

It's been a few years since I saw it, but I remember that the Mayo in Rochester, MN had an exhibit space, all about the history of the hospital and its founders, and I think it was quite well done.

    Hello Cindy:

In 2011 the St. Joseph Mercy Health System completed renovation of its Ann Arbor, Michigan headquarters medical campus to celebrate the anniversary of its founding. The health system expresses itself with a dramatic lobby, shops, restaurants and artwork, and I designed a history exhibit there, entitled "A Century of Caring," for both external and internal audiences. This site is not far from you, might be worth a look.

    All the best,

    Joe

During AAM 2014 in Seattle, there was a tour of the Gates Foundation campus, which touches on every aspect you mention. They do an excellent job of communicating about all the good they do around the world. Great photos of their interactive visitor center here: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/Visitor-Center/Photos and if you do a Google image search you will see lots of photos of the campus. Best, Kathy

Wells Fargo Museum in Philadelphia is well done and has some interactives.  I believe they have them in other cities.

    Hi Cindy,

I would be happy to chat off-line if you like - I run the Museum of Vision at the national headquarters of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. All our displays are in the halls of the building and conference rooms. jbenjamin@aao.org

I would also recommend reaching out to the corporate history listserv. It is a Yahoo group run by AASLH.
