Good for you and your colleagues, Lauren, for trying to break the mold and breath some life into a stale, if well intentioned, ritual. I wonder if digging a little deeper into those good intentions might lead somewhere.
What would a symbolic gift giving ceremony look (and feel) like--the museum presenting the new wing to your members as a gift that they, in turn, are giving through their support to the broader community. You might even have the museum present a 3-D printed version of the sculpture (or something else, if that's verboten) to a representative from each of your membership categories. (I see you have 11. Great way to put a face on those supporters who are usually lost in these events. Tableau vivant kinda thing.
And, in a cascading effect, maybe the public opening becomes a different type of gift giving ceremony in which the staff and member groups present public reps with a gift wrapped new wing (door, etc.) that they then unwrap to great applause and funfetti.
Getting a little carried away with myself, here, but hope this might spark some fresh thinking. Good luck.

Subject: Alternatives to Ribbon Cutting for New Wing/Sculpture
We are opening the new 50,000 square foot wing of our Museum and kicking off the Member Preview Party prior to the public opening is an unveiling of a new Paul Feeley 21' sculpture acquisition in the new outdoor sculpture garden. We'll have brief remarks, then want to have a Dedication Moment/Kick off to the opening of doors to the new wing. It will be end of October at noon, so daylight and may be a bit cool. And we're already doing funfetti the next day at the Public Opening.
Has anyone seen or done really cool alternatives to a ribbon-cutting ceremony? Thanks!
