    Hello -

Our temporary exhibition gallery floor is covered with a less than attractive carpet that needs to be replaced due to stains and we are discussing changing to another type of flooring that would hopefully be easier to keep clean.

We are a house museum and the gallery is the original kitchen area that was converted in 1978.  All surfaces are hard (brick, concrete and plaster) and the windows were removed along with the appliances so the last time the room was re-carpeted it became obvious how much sound the carpet absorbed.  There are flush floor outlets that are at the level of the carpet but when it is taken up are raised so any new materiel would need to be fitted around them as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions of materials? Or is there a resource that can help me figure out sound absorption rates of flooring?

    Thank you

    Lenora

If you feel that carpet is the best option, carpet tiles work really well. They may be somewhat more expensive than other options, but are easy to install and easy to swap out when one is stained or damaged.

Interface Carpet, which also has an associate retail company- Flor, has a lot of nice carpet tiles and a system for sticking them down temporarily. I have worked on museum projects where Interface was used. They have some attractive heavyuse area solutions- even carpet for garages. You might want to talk to one of their reps.

Carpet tiles are a very good option, but I would also look into good cork tiles as another option. Easy to install and maintain. Most soft flooring has the sound absorption rated on the back of a sample folder and also easy to get from the distributor.

Since our floors are concrete, we had the floors polished when the building was built 6 1/2  years ago.  It takes minimal maintenance and looks great after that amount of time.  I have used carpet tiles in the past and always had to replace them every  6 to 7 years.  The polished concrete has been more cost effective as long as proper maintenance is done.  Costs about $1,000.00 per year to maintain them.
