Hello everyone! I was wondering if I could enlist everyone's help in a little artifact identification. I found a padlock in my museum and I am trying to pinpoint a date for it. The museum is two jail buildings, 1808 and 1823, so I think it is from around then, but I am having trouble finding information that could help me better pinpoint a date. I'm attaching a picture, so everyone can see it. It's really cool!!

     Thanks in advance!

Interesting piece.  It is far outside of my experience, but at a recent visit to the V & A Museum in London I saw in their ironwork section an amazing collection of locks dating back several centuries, many of remarkable complexity.  Perhaps there is someone on their curatorial staff who specializes in "lockology" that could be of assistance.  Good luck!

The Deutsches Museum in Munich also has an amazing and vast collection of locks (beautifully displayed, too!) , so they might also be able to help. ------------------------------ Andrea Durham VP, Exhibits, Facilities and DIgital Initatives Science World Vancouver BC ------------------------------
