Search for glacier imagery in contemporary art

  • 1.  Search for glacier imagery in contemporary art

    Dear museum colleagues,

A researcher in the department of Geology at the University of Oregon is developing a project around art and glaciers. She is looking for modern and contemporary artists and/or exhibitions working with glacier themes in any media. She is especially interested in Icelandic artists, but is not limited to that nationality. Please contact M Jackson directly at jerilynn@uoregon.edu if you have any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

    Sincerely,
    Danielle Knapp

Interesting challenge.  I have three ideas. One is Max Beckmann's "The Sinking of the Titanic" where the iceberg (a chunk of glacier, so it counts??) is in the far right distance, the 1912 disaster foregrounded.  Another, older, is perhaps the opposite of glaciers, John Martin's 1812 painting "Sadak in Search of the Waters of Oblivion", a lone figure clinging to a foreground cliff with jagged mountainous crags in the distance, very red (the struggling figure is scantily clad, and it looks hot), not glaciers but a stunning sense of a foreboding jagged geological landscape!  Both paintings are at The Saint Louis Art Museum...The third idea is Inuit prints, a relatively new art form for the Inuit people of the Canadian north, replete with images of life on snow and ice. The Dennos Museum in Traverse City MI has a terrific Inuit collection, both works on paper and small stone sculptures. Many of the prints are stylized animal motifs (quite beautiful) but there are lots of genre scenes, showing daily life on the ice (igloos, hunts, treks...). Not sure the setting technically qualifies as glaciers, but it's a start...Good luck!

The Nordic Heritage museum in Seattle just closed an exhibit called Imaging the Arctic. Perhaps they may be a resource for you.

Also, your colleague probably knows of James Balog's Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) project, stunning photos documenting glaciers' change over many years, time-lapse shots every half-hour in many locations around the world...check it out.  Beautiful stills, and the film "Chasing Ice" tells the story.

Often when I am developing a themed exhibition or project, I will post a call for objects on the site of the New York Foundation for the Arts, www.nyfa.org. Go to Classified and then to Opportunities to post a call (it costs a little bit, but is worth the widespread coverage). Artists from all over the country and around the world go to that site and spread the word among their colleagues about your query. Also, the College Art Association, www.collegeart.org also posts call for objects. Perhaps an art history colleague who belongs would be able to post  a call.

Funny, can't see the original post, so not sure if I'm on the mark: if sculptural *interpretations* in glass would be useful, I can recommend several different artists.

Many Alaska museums' collections contain artworks that depict glaciers. In particular, I would recommend contacting the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. Sadly, their collection is not yet online, but they have digital images of the many landscapes and other glacier-inspired works they would likely share.

For a taste, check into these three books, each of which has two or three such works included:

Painting in the North: Alaskan Art in the Anchorage Museum of History and Art by Kesler E. Woodward, U of Washington Press, 1993.
Looking North: Art from the University of Alaska Museum edited by Aldona Jonaitis, U of Washington Press, 1998.
Icebreakers: Alaska's Most Innovative Artists by Julie Decker, Distributed by Decker Art Services, Anchorage, 1999.

We had the Vanishing Ice exhibit in El Paso last summer at the El Paso Museum of Art.
Needless to say, the ice sculpture did not last very long in the desert heat and wind!
    Great glacier imagery!

We recently featured a local photographer, Sam Krisch, in an exhibition. He has many beautiful photos of glaciers in the Antarctic (as well as images from many other locations). Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but here's his website: http://samkrisch.com/
    Best of luck!
