  • 1.  Women + Museums Survey

    Posted 02-24-2015 06:43 AM
For our forthcoming book on women and the museum workplace (Left Coast
Press, 2016), Joan Baldwin and I have developed a survey, which is now
available in both short and long forms.  The survey asks for your input on
the gender make-up of your institution's staff and board; your thoughts
about gender-based issues in the museum workplace, and your experiences
with managing gender bias in your career.

This is not meant to be a statistically significant survey.  It's a
beginning scan, an opportunity to help us see gendered patterns in the
museum workplace and understand what's important to men and women.  We hope
it will help to raise the bar and prevent gender from being an obstacle.

Please consider taking one of the surveys and please encourage your
colleagues to do so, too.  We welcome input from men as well as women.

The short survey should take about 30 minutes depending on your desire to
    answer open-ended questions.

The long survey could take as long as an hour, again depending on your
    desire to answer open-ended questions.

    Survey short form:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/D6YKQ8D

    Survey long form:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/D5T8HMG

We are indebted to our colleagues and friends Susie Wilkening and Conny
Graft for their generous help with the preparation of these surveys.

    Dear Anne Ackerson,
In case you haven't encountered it, I recently published a book that may be relevant to your study. I'm attaching the announcement.

Please suggest that survey takers should prepare by checking their board membership and structure.  Many people do not have easy access to that information.

Good morning, Barbara Cohen-Stratyner, and anyone else contemplating filling out the Women+Museums survey.

First, thank you all for your time and your interest in our project. As we explained, this isn't a statistically significant survey, but an initial scan as we begin the discussion about issues of gender in the museum workplace. That said, yes, Barbara Cohen-Stratyner is correct. There are questions about your organization's board and its gender balance in the survey. You are welcome to skip these if obtaining this information is difficult or time consuming. If it's a click away, and you access the information ahead of time, the process may move more quickly.

Next, just a word to consultants and retirees: Please don't feel that questions about boards of trustees mean that you shouldn't be taking the survey. Au contraire, just skip the questions that don't apply to you as a consultant or as a retiree and continue.

Last, while this is a survey about gender in the museum workplace, it's not exclusively for women. In the long survey, women are responding nine to one, over men. Whether this is question of how it's framed, whether women feel more strongly than men about these issues, we don't know yet, but the survey is open to men and women.

Again, we greatly appreciate your support for the Women+Museums project.
