As both a Professor of Art History and the Curator/Director of our campus Art Gallery, I am always trying to tie the past and present together. Throughout my career, I have found that if you pick a theme for a show, you can use that as a way to effectively link the past and present. I believe that this would apply to any subject area, art, science, history or technology. The installation of such shows can reveal the connections whether the works are installed in chronological order or by pairing or grouping similar objects, images, etc., to make the visual connections which can then be amplified through explanatory labels. A great resource is the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience.  Their mission statement describes their purpose "to engage the public in connecting past and present in order to envision and shape a more just and humane future."  Their website is www.sites of conscience.org. With members throughout the world, they are developing and sharing best practices for exhibition and dialogue on difficult topics both national and international.
