Exhibits or Programs about Race, Culture, and Identity

  • 1.  Exhibits or Programs about Race, Culture, and Identity

The Michigan Humanities Council is in the process of implementing a new grant program focused on exploring the history of race and cultural identity in Michigan.  What are some compelling examples you've come across of exhibits, programing, or other events around the topic of race, ethnicity, and cultural identity?

We anticipate proposals from cultural organizations, museums, and other community groups/nonprofits and would like to include a list of project examples on our website from which potential applicants might gain inspiration and insights for their proposals.

I can't find a greater example in Michigan than the mission and work of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and Culture in Detroit.

We're starting a new immigration project here to examine and celebrate some of the MANY cultures that have made up Alexandria's population over the years.  From the early beginnings in the 18th and early 19th centuries with native and second- and third-generation Africans mixed in with Scots, Irish and English, to the present day in which foreign-born residents of the city make up a quarter of our population, and the public schools serve children born in 110 different countries, who speak 138 different languages at home.

Still writing a grant for it, but I'd be happy to send someone a copy of the text when it's done, so you can see what we're up to.

For a historic, precedent-setting exhibition on race and identity, look at Mining the Museum, a collaboration between The Contemporary Museum (Baltimore) The Maryland Historical Society and artist Fred Wilson.

For another older example (20 years ago), see the 1995 review by Monroe Fordham of an exhibit at The Strong Museum in Rochester, NY, "Between Two Worlds: African-American Identity and American Culture." The review is in The Public Historian 17(3): 142-144

The Science Museum of Minnesota has a traveling exhibition called 'RACE: Are We So Different?' It is currently in our temporary exhibition space and has gotten a great response from the local community. I believe this exhibition was also in Kalamazoo a number of years ago.

The "RACE: Are We So Different?" exhibit was also at the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, Florida a few summers ago. It was a wonderful exhibit that sparked a ton of really great conversations. We had a comment box with a question about what race was and why it mattered, and the number of comments that we got was outstanding! Comments from adults, children, teenagers, and everyone. Excellent exhibit!

To the list people have started, I'd also recommend looking at exhibits and programs from The Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte, NC.

Certainly the Jim Crow Museum of Racist Memorabilia at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, MI, should be on your list. Their website is <http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/>.

Several years back they collaborated with the NYPL Schomburg Center in New York to create the very compelling exhibition 'Humantypes vs Stereotypes.'

Brooklyn Historical Society's Crossing Borders, Bridging Generations project explored mixed heritage, identity, and racism through dialogic programming, content-rich website, new oral history collecting, and a soon to come curriculum. www.cbbg.brooklynhistory.org.
