  • 1.  Programming for Veterans in Art

    Posted 12-08-2014 06:21 PM

    Hello everyone,

My name is Diana Klein and I'm a Master's Candidate in Museology at the University of Washington. For my thesis I'm examining museum programs that serve veterans, particularly in the fields of art and art therapy. I've found a variety of programs, but I'm sure there are some I haven't heard about. I was hoping this group could send me a list of any programs involving veterans and art of which you're aware. Thanks in advance for your help!

There was an article a while back in the VA magazine that talked about using art for rehabilitation. Hope this helps!

    Hi Diana,

I don't know of museum programs in particular but I can pass along two places where you may be able to find more about this topic in general. First is Americans for the Arts' National Initiative for Arts & Health in the Military: http://www.americansforthearts.org/by-program/reports-and-data/legislation-policy/the-national-initiative-for-arts-health-in-the-military. The other is the Arts & Health Alliance, a national service organization for the arts and health field: https://www.artsandhealthalliance.org/.

I used to work at the Arts & Health Alliance and know that they are working hard right now on military-specific programs.

Best of luck - sounds like a really interesting topic!

    Hi Diana--

At AAM last year I saw a session about this topic, here is the description: http://www.aam-us.org/events/annual-meeting/program/sessions-and-events?ID=2318

Also, at the Phillips Collection, we are about to debut a program at the DC VA Hospital that combines museum education and recreational therapy. Let me know if if our pilot is of interest to you.

    Dear Diana,

We have a Warriors Eyes on Art program working with the Warriors in Transition program at Schofield Barracks here on O'ahu.

They tour the museum and have a therapeutic art-making session in one of our studio classrooms.

    Hi Dana,
Great topic! Our publication Next Practices in Art Museum Education includes several veteran program examples, including Hot Shop Heroes from the Museum of Glass (which may be familiar to you since you're in WA), which uses glass making as therapy. http://bit.ly/1klL7li

A few other examples off the top of my head:
The Saint Louis Art Museum hosts veteran-led tours each year on Veterans Day. http://www.slam.org/news/?p=893

Echoing Lesa's comment above about the Honolulu Museum of Art programs - last year their director , Stephan Jost, was on the NEA's podcast, where he talked about the museum's close relationship with the huge military community in Hawaii. I loved this interview: http://arts.gov/audio/stephan-jost

Not sure if it is still going on but last year the Frist Center in Nashville offered free memberships for military.

I believe the Minneapolis Institute of Arts also has an art therapy program for veterans suffering from PTSD.

Good luck! I would love to read your thesis when it is done - this is a topic that is near and dear to our hearts at AAMD.
    Cheers,
    Alison

Have you spoken to anyone at the National Veterans Art Museum (NVAM) in Chicago? I experienced the museum through a visit and a presentation by their education coordinator, Christine Bespalec-Davis, as part of a Chicago Hands-On Educators (CHOE) meeting. I especially was fascinated by their permanent exhibit, The Things They Carried. Their website is http://www.nvam.org/. Christine's email is cbespalecdavis@nvam.org

    Hi!
Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro will spend 2015 exploring the story of veterans and their families in the South Bay area. We will install a year-long exhibition that is an artist led community project with 4 vets, roundtable conversations with vets, families and the community over particular topics, art making workshops in conjunction with local High School that touch on issues related to the veteran experience and a staging of "the moth". It has been a rewarding experience thus far as we focus on bring multiply voices to the table rather than the singular; reach out to organizations such as VFW groups, veterans for peace as well as local individuals who are doing good work to support the troops; and positioning everything for our weekly fieldtrips of third graders. All of this is being guided by a group of labor, community, union activists as well as artists.

    Happy to share more... isabelle@angelsgateart.org
