  • 1.  Please help with sources to cite for the growth of museums

    Posted 11-25-2014 04:54 PM
    Dear All,

I'm having trouble finding sources to cite in a footnote concerning what I believe and have been told is the considerable growth of new museums in the last generation. Can anyone suggest books or articles I can cite that make this argument and have the data to back it up?

    All the best,

    Seph

    Dear Seph,

Although it's 15 years old, Stephen Weil's 1999 article is very insightful and full of hard data. If you're looking at trends over a generation, the age of the article might not be a big drawback; but you want something more recent, I suggest looking for other articles by Weil - he writes very clearly, cites his (many) sources, and draws on a variety of reports, studies, and data sets.

    Yours warmly,
    Stephanie

Did you try google?  I just came across this - https://beardocs.baylor.edu/xmlui/bitstream/handle/2104/4196/joseph_ettle_masters.pdf  - possible more info than you ever wanted!  It's from 2006, I don't know if you are looking for more recent data.

This one - http://www.ibisworld.com/industry/default.aspx?indid=1640 - might not be the approach you expected, but it is more recent!

There is a new book on this very subject: Museums on the Map, 1995-2012, Guido Guerzoni, ed. Fondazione di Venezia in association with Umberto Allemandi.

Steven Weil ' s writings were seminal to the development and analysis of American museums. Part of that might have been that he always agreed to speak at all museums that asked him. We miss him greatly and no one seems to have picked up his particular analytical thread.
