  • 1.  Using project management software to track strategic plan progress

Good morning. I am wondering if any of you know of a museum that uses off the shelf project management software SPECIFICALLY to track their progress on strategic plan goals and objectives. Thanks!

    Hi Laura,

I am a former museum staff who oversaw capital and restoration projects. Currently I am consulting as an owner's representative that works with nonprofits on their strategic capital plans. I do not know of particular museums that use specific software but I highly recommend using a project management software to track any planning project.

I have clients that prefer several different ones, it all depends on the size and budget of the user. Asana is the easiest to use, set up and the free version is useful for most projects.

Feel free to reach out if you need further information.

    Best,

    Hi Laura,

I'm also an Owner's Representative for museum capital projects (have served on museum staffs and now have my own business).  I've heard good things about Megan's suggestion, Asana, but have not used it myself.  Many of my clients use the free version of Smartsheet and find it very intuitive to use.  (I use a paid version, which can handle multiple projects).

I've never heard of anyone using this type of software for strategic plan goals and objectives, but since it can be customized for tracking tasks, durations, critical path, etc., I see no reason why it couldn't be used for strategic planning just as easily as for exhibit or building planning.

    Cheers,
    Barbara

    Hi Laura,

I work at a small art museum in Denver Colorado and we started using Asana over a year ago.  By chance, do you know of any other museums that use Asana?  We are in the process of adding our Strategic Plan into Asana as well.  Any advise or experience with that?

    Thank you,

I'm not sure if they'll still have this since the plan was created pre-pandemic, but The House of the Seven Gables used SmartSheet for this project. If you'd like me to make an introduction, please be in touch julie@museumtastic.com.
