Hello--We will be creating a new position and I'm hoping people will share job descriptions with me.

We are building a huge addition to our history museum and need someone to:

    • Create tour outlines for exhibits.
    • Hire, train, and supervise part time tour guides/interpreters.
    • Train and supervise volunteer tour guides/interpreters.
    • Create audio tours. (We've never done this before, so this would involve researching platforms.)
    • Serve on the exhibit team to advise on educational components for future exhibits.
    • Bring and disseminate best practices in interpretation (possibly NAI certified)? (We are woefully behind in implementing best practices.)
    • Have a love for and commitment to communicating nuanced history.

We want someone with the knowledge of best practices in interpretation and be able to manage and train staff and track tour guide hours to stay within state parameters). By 2026 this person will be responsible for supervising a tour scheduler and at least 6 paid part-time tour guides working across three sites (with hours fluctuating seasonally).

I'm not even sure what the term of art for this type of position is, which needs to be both managerial (tracking and scheduling, hiring, training, and firing) and an inspirational interpreter up to date on current best practice. Any information you have (Position Descriptions, things to look for, etc.) would be very helpful. Feel free to email me at mkohl@mt.gov.
