  • 1.  Question about moving to online ticketing

We are considering moving our guest ticketing to digital only. I would love to know how others have done this and what I should be aware of.

Our museum does not have this currently, but my thoughts as a frequent museum goer:
I definitely love it in terms of ease!  What logistics have you in mind so far?  I'm thinking where you receive an email with your ticket that can be scanned at the door.
In terms of accessibility, though, you'd need an option for people who are not so technologically-inclined or those without access to internet, etc. For example, our local art museum, Nelson Atkins, have digital QR tickets.  But they have a service desk where they will print off your tickets or you can purchase directly there.

This is the set up we currently have - we have a kiosk where we scan QR codes or look up the last names of members, which gets guests in faster. Those without pre-purchased tickets have to get in line to pay.
For special events, we only do pre-purchase/online tickets. We have staff dedicated to answering phone calls for those who are not as tech savvy and need help pre-purchasing.
We have considered doing a discounted price for online tickets for our regular admission days (approx. $1 off for pre-purchase tickets), to encourage guests to pre-purchase. We are also considering installing kiosks where guests can purchase tickets onsite, then get in line to have the QR code scanned. From a guests perspective, this would let them purchase online or purchase onsite, but from a staff perspective it, the check in process is the same either way.

I agree with Erika Miller - unless you want to eliminate visits by non-technologically inclined people, people who don't care to leave a digital footprint, people who don't plan ahead, you will still need a service desk in the site.

We sell tickets on-line (and on site) but our visitors do not always know how to retrieve the tickets off their phone.  They will show us the confirmation email.  If we are lucky then there is a link that we ask them to click to open up the tickets.  But we also have to pull their on-line order and print many tickets on site.

If you sell tickets through third party sellers make sure your staff knows how to look up those orders as well.

We did have one amusing (to us) incident.  A visitor had put in a fake email, and thus did not get the tickets or a confirmation email.  I heard the story secondhand, so I am not sure if they were able to look the order up by their name.

Overall it is very helpful for us.  We get 3/4 to one million visitors per year.
