Deaccessioning and Its Discontents
Many museums are accelerating the pace at which they deaccession items from their collections. Some are disposing of redundant works, others are seeking broader, more inclusive representation, and still others are looking to buttress their budgets. Whatever the reasons for deaccessioning, dangers may lurk. Chief among these is the multiplying of 'orphan' works of art, which all too often disappear into private ownership, reducing access and endangering their preservation. What are the principal dangers of deaccessioning and what measures can museums take to mitigate their impact?
Steven Miller has served as a curator, administrator, director, trustee, author, consultant, and museum studies educator. During his career he held leadership positions in six major museums. Since retiring in 2018 he has written extensively on various museum profession topics. His books include The Anatomy of a Museum: An Insider's Text (2018); Deaccessioning Today: Theory and Practice (2018); Museum Collection Ethics: Acquisition, Stewardship, and Interpretation (2020); and Museum Collecting Lessons: Stories From the Inside ( 2022).
