  • 1.  Paid Time Off (PTO) Donation Program

    Posted 10-16-2024 08:56 AM
At Space Center Houston, we want to initiate a Paid Time Off donation program, where our employees can help others who have medical emergencies or other critical needs and have exhausted their PTO.  With our HR & Payroll system, this is proving more challenging than expected.  Does anyone else have such a Program?  I'd love to talk with you about it!

    Thanks,
    Brady

    Hi Brady,

I suggest you look at how state government handles this. When I worked for state museums in Mississippi and Kentucky they had a leave donation program where you could donate to a specific individual or just to a general pool where it could by anyone in an emergency. It was great having it as an option, both as a leave donor and as a potential user. Good luck!

    Hi Brady,

What are your current policies around PTO and sick leave?

    Hi Brady,

I retired from the museum world in 2018, but there was a pretty active group of HR professionals here at AAM! If it's still active, you should join. I even presented a couple of times at the annual conference.

That being said, I always had a vacation donation policy in place and it was well received by staff. Just be sure you follow the IRS guidelines in establishing your policy. For example, it is not retractable. They cannot donate to a specific person; rather it must be to a pool.

What is your HRIS that can't seem to handle it? We always simply deducted the amount of time donated from the vacation bank of the donor and deposited it into the bank of the donee.

I'd be happy to chat further.
