  • 1.  Neon art spectrometer readings

    Posted 06-26-2025 01:16 PM

    Hello,

I posted a thread in this forum back in May asking for input on evaluating two neon works from our permanent collection for their impact on neighboring works. I was able to work with a colleague from my institution's astronomy department and measured the two works with spectrometer today.

The older red neon measured as expected, and was gauged to be relatively safe for neighboring works.

The blue neon, which was produced more recently, came off with significantly higher intensity which surprised my colleague, and thus will not be displayed near other works until we can get a better idea of it's longterm impact. Unfortunately my contract is ending sooner than I can finish this inquiry but I will be leaving the data with colleagues for a potential cross disciplinary study in the future. I thought I would post my findings here in case anyone else had similar cases or was curious about the results.

Anna, it would great to have just a bit more information regarding the blue neon analysis. I realize that you have not been able to answer all the questions that you have about, but I am curious to know more about the exact spots on the electromagnetic spectrum for the smaller spikes that seem to be in or near the ultraviolet frequences, as well as the very high spikes in the visible energy range. Can you say exactly where the spikes are in the UV and visible range, and the measured intensity? I cannot quite sort that out on the image you posted. I am very curious to know!

    Thank you,

    Bruce

I would just like to say that I unironically appreciate a good Windows XP screenshot in mid-2025!
