  • 1.  Museum Alumni Association?

    Posted 10-13-2023 02:14 PM

    Hi Everyone,

I am on the board for a small museum connected with the University of Oregon. Before joining the Board I was a student with the University and was connected with them through my time working the front desk, shop, back office, and primarily my involvement in their student club putting on events and outreach to other students on campus. Because of my time I have a special affinity for this museum and find more interest in their work than any department, division, etc. with the actual University.

Since the museum typically has several student employees in our Education, Public Programs, Research, and Collections departments there are quite a few alumni that feel the same way as I do. With that being said I am planning to pitch to my museum the idea of creating an "alumni-association" like group that is meant for those alumni who volunteered or worked for the Museum before graduating.

For those who are with museum's attached to a University or who have similar groups, I'd love to hear if anyone is doing or has tried to something similar? How did it go? What were the strengths, weaknesses, etc. I'd love to pick your brain!

    Thank you everyone!

While not officially an alumni group, the academic museum of which I was the director established its first volunteer docent program after 120 years of its existence!  Because it resides in a small city where many alumni either remain or return, the program drew heavily from alumni partly by default.  The volunteers not involved in the interpreter program were also largely alumni or parents of alumni.  The camaraderie has been remarkable, even through COVID and closure for restorations.

Give them something specific to do (or ask them what they want to do for the museum) and I believe it will be a success!
