    Measuring the Value of Museums

What is the value of a museum? How do you measure it? The value of something is determined by users, not creators. Accordingly, the public value of a museum is disproportionately determined by how a museum's users perceive they benefit from interacting with the museum. From this perspective, museums create value by supporting meaningful museum experiences; experiences that result in enhanced feelings of personal, intellectual, social, and physical well-being. Although intangible, feeling of well-being are measurable. Described will be findings from three large scale studies involving tens of thousands of visitors and nearly three dozen museums from two countries.

Dr. John H. Falk is Founder and CEO of the Institute for Learning Innovation, Emeritus Sea Grant Professor of Free-Choice Learning at Oregon State University, and is known internationally for his research on and writings about museum visitors. HIs current research focuses on assessing the well-being-related value generated by the public's leisure-time use of museums and other similar settings and helping cultural institutions rethink their educational positioning in the contemporary era. His latest books are The Value of Museums (2021) and Leaning into Value (2025).
