AAMG and AASLH have partnered to offer a new course through AASLH's Small Museum Pro! Certificate that addresses the specific needs of museum practitioners at, or collaborating with, institutions affiliated with universities and colleges. This course will benefit academic museums and galleries of different types and sizes. The course is designed for those with limited previous experience working in academic museums. The goal of the course is to establish a solid foundation so participants can be successful working in museums within higher education.
Please note that this is not a standard museum studies course. This is a course specific to academic museums. The instructor's background, proposed syllabus, and assignments should all connect to the unique nature of academic museums and not museums in general.
We seek a seasoned academic museum professional with experience developing curriculum for an online course. The course will be structured as an 8-week course following AASLH's other course offerings, which typically include being primarily asynchronous with weekly assignments and discussion threads, as well as biweekly 1 hour zoom sessions and office hours.
AAMG is sponsoring the curriculum development portion of this partnership, will own the rights to the course and retain ownership of the course content. AASLH will provide the course facilitation honorarium and the course online learning management system for use by the facilitator.
Topics to be covered in the curriculum include, but are not limited to:
- Understanding the relationship between academic museums and higher education (i.e., history of academic museums; different types of academic museums including art, science, and natural history)
- Finances and fundraising specific to working within a parent organization (i.e., collaborating with a Foundation; Office of Sponsored Research, etc.)
- Connecting the campus and community through public programs
- The benefits and challenges of collection care within of an academic environment
- Managing the operations of an academic museum (i.e., working with the facilities department, infrastructure projects, managing the operations within a parent institution).
- Advocacy within your institution and with your local, state, and national government
- Faculty and student engagement (i.e., student docent programs, academic outreach, course visits, art club, student and faculty exhibitions).

Qualifications and Preferred Experience
- Teaching or curriculum design experience, online or in-person
- Extensive experience working in academic museums
- Experience teaching museum studies or arts administration
