  • 1.  Best Practices for Museum Community Engagement ??

    Posted 12-15-2024 11:52 PM

    Hi everyone,

I hope you are all doing well! As someone passionate about museums and their role in fostering community connections.., I would love to hear your thoughts on best practices for effective engagement with diverse audiences.

    • How does your museum or organization build lasting relationships with underserved communities: ??
    • Are there innovative programs, events or partnerships that have worked particularly well for you: ??
    • How do you incorporate community feedback into your exhibitions or programming: ??

I am especially interested in examples where museums have gone beyond traditional approaches to create authentic connections. For instance;, hosting co-curation projects or offering free workshops rooted in local culture.

Looking forward to learning from this amazing community's experiences and insights. Your ideas could help shape better practices for all of us trying to make museums more inclusive and meaningful !!

Thanks in advance for sharing !!

    With Regards,

    Marcelo Salas

Hello Marcelo, You may be interested in the article that Xoe Fiss and I co-authored in the May-June 2024 issue of Museum Magazine. We described a project and partnership that fits the qualities you mentioned. Our article is on pages 34-39 and it is titled,

"Partnering for Community Healing and Change Museums can play a role in destigmatizing addiction disorder." By Xoe Fiss and Patty Bode

    Dear Marcelo

In my experience as a volunteer community engagement changes with the museum because they all approach it differently. Also when I did my internship I answered visitor questions about objects on a 'study table' at the Eye Museum a medical history museum in San Francisco connected to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. I am an emerging museum professional and look forward to being apart of community engagement.

    Thanks,

    Rachel

    Hey there,

We did a project with local housing authority communities, out of which came a write up which I am attaching here. I hope it is helpful!
