  • 1.  AAM Session - Hope in a Distraught World

    Posted 10-11-2022 01:44 PM
    Hi all,

After reading through the AAM theme, I have an idea for a session and I'd love to get folks thoughts on the concept and see if anyone else is interested in helping me bring this idea to fruition.

Life is hard. We often talk about the past few years, but the fact of the matter is that life is just generally hard for most folks. However, there's still a lot of hope out there. One of the things we do really well as informal learning organizations is help fulfill that need for hope, wonder, and joy. I've spent a bit of time thinking about what the worth of much of my work is in the past few years, and I think there is true value for that reason. One of the things we do here is produce the images for the public from the data from the James Webb Space Telescope and Hubble Space Telescope. It's been a big year and it's been fantastic to see the response. People have been looking for bright spots in the world and we've helped provide that.

I'd like to hear more from some museums about how they help with uplifting folks in trying times. These could be big national things, but there might be even more value in the super local experiences. I'd also like to go beyond case study reports and talking heads to create something more interactive where people walk away with ideas or potential partnerships or resources so they have something to put into practice. I also want people to walk out of the session thinking, "that was fun, you really had to be there!"

So, any thoughts from the community? Is there something worthwhile here? Something you'd like to take away? Anyone who would be interested in helping develop a proposal and deliver a session? Reply to get some discussion going here or reach out to me at trhue@stsci.edu.

    Hi, Timothy,
You should speak with Marike Van Damme about her Joyful Museums project. She's been working on this for a while.
    Be well.
