  • 1.  Contacts at Nat. Museum of African-American History (and others)

    Posted 10-12-2021 12:55 PM
    Hi, All -

I'm looking for recommendations of folks to contact--most likely
education/interpretation--at the National Museum of African-American
History and Culture and any other museums or heritage sites who are
involved with telling the stories/untold (or seldom-told) history of
    America.

This is for Sara Eisenberg, a non-museum colleague who teaches and leads
groups in Radical Inclusion -- she has an idea for a year-long
transformational journey course, drawing on museums as resources. The
spark of her idea began when she learned about a virtual writing retreat
I did last January that used online exhibits (and which I hope to offer
again next January--it was fun and participants had a great time and
    wrote Good Stuff).

More info about Sara and Radical Inclusion Practice on her website,
    here: https://alifeofpractice.com/radical-inclusion/

    Much thanks!

I worked on a project with Montclair History Center in NJ, to reinterpret their historic house to include the history of when it was an African American YWCA for "Colored Women and Girls" from 1920 - 1965. I suggest you contact Jane Eliasof, Executive Director there. The project had a profound effect on the organization and the community, and this sounds like it might be something they'd be interested in.

    Hello Judy,
I'd recommend connecting with the Association of African American Museums (info@blackmuseums.org). They have a number of museum members doing this important work.

Additionally, perhaps Sara would be interested in Facing History and Ourselves? https://www.facinghistory.org/ They are not a museum, but an educational non-profit. Facing History and Ourselves uses lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate.
They have a unit on race: https://www.facinghistory.org/reconstruction-era

    Best of luck to Sara!
