  • 1.  Where does revenue come from?

Does anyone know of a recent report on the percent of revenue from different sources (e.g. earned income, donors, govt.) and trends?

    Betty,

You might find that information in the latest 'Giving USA: Annual Report on Philanthropy' - which is published by the eponymous organization and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University.

    best regards,

Hello! I think you'll find these 2 reports helpful. One is for art museums, the other science centers, though neither are necessarily recent but a good indication nonetheless.

Museum funding comes from one or more of four sources: earned revenue; investment income; philanthropic giving by individuals; and grants.  Government owned and operated museums are a bit different as they are supported through annual government appropriations but they can and often do chase funds in the ways private nonprofit entities do, as cited above. The percentages for the four sources will vary by institution.  As noted in some of the references recommended by others, individual giving tends to be the largest source.  Most museum annual reports have a succinct financial summary which is divieded into income and expense.  Reading a few of these from varioius museums should give you a sense of where their money comes from.
