Recommendations - foam core cutter for labels

  • 1.  Recommendations - foam core cutter for labels

We have been placing our labels on foam core, then cutting them. We have an old cutter.. but it is not in the best shape now.

I am curious what all of you might be using - we are looking for clean cuts and can measure precisely.

    Thank you!

We do it the old fashioned way, a cutting mat, a large straight-edge & a box (art) cutter. Works great.

I have used Logan full-size mat cutters for many years now to cut foam core and other types of board to back exhibition labels and text panels. The cutter works great on foam core down to thinner cardstock backing boards. The cutter also has the option for straight or beveled edges, so it can be used for a multitude of projects, from matting artwork to foam core-backed text panels. There are a variety of styles and prices.  There are other brands, but Logan was recommended at my first museum, so I've stayed with that brand.

I believe Logan is the brand we are ordering for our new cutter.  It cuts plexi-glass as well.  I'm looking forward to it.  Our old cutter is oooollllld! More than 20 I think.

Plexi? Interesting. I think I need a different Logan - as ours is not working.

I would be curious at which of the Logan cutters it is.  I was looking at a few.

Let me get the model number/name for you.  Our Exhibits Manager just ordered it today.  I'm super excited.  Out old one has to be more than 30, lol

I agree with John, a metal T-Square, and a SHARP knife (I like the box-cutters with the snap-off-blades)
Then the secret is to do the cut using a series of three (or more) shallow cuts.   Cutting just the top paper, then into the foam, then a little deeper in the foam, then the bottom paper.    Don't rush it and try and slice through in one pass.

    Hi David,

We use matte board for our labels.  If the label is going in a case with something delicate, we use an acid-free (archival) matte boards.  We have an old cutter for foam core and matte board but are in the process of ordering a new one.  I also use one of those giant paper cutters to cut the labels once mounted to the matte. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Marlena.jones@scmuseum.org or 803-898-4963
