  • 1.  Water in Museum Galleries

    Posted 08-07-2019 05:45 PM

We are discussing whether we should allow visitors to carry water bottles into the galleries. Right now we do not allow anyone to carry a plastic, glass, or metal water bottle that can be closed tightly, into a space where there is art. If someone has such a bottle in their purse or bag, it can be taken into the galleries but if, for instance, a man comes in the door carrying a water bottle and he cannot fit it in a pocket or bag, he must return it to his car or put it in a locker in our coat room. We do not allow drinking from such containers in the galleries at all unless it is for a medical condition. We are noticing that some museums are now allowing water bottles in their galleries. There is concern that if we allow visitors to carry bottles openly in the galleries, they will begin drinking from them. We do have spaces where drinking beverages is allowed such as in our front lobby where visitors can purchase coffee and tea. At present, our only working water fountain is on the second floor. In our permanent collection, security personnel rove in multiple galleries. There is not a guard stationed in each gallery. I would be interested in thoughts as well as policies from art museums. Many thanks for your thoughts.
