  • 1.  Museum Policy Manual

    Posted 12-20-2018 03:39 PM
We have a variety of policies at our museum but they are not in one comprehensive manual. We've tried to do a little research into what should be in an organizational manual, but haven't found a good comprehensive list.

Does anyone out there have a table of contents or manual that they can share?

We know we want to have in this manual:
    -collections policy
    -interpretive policy
    -visitor policy
    -photography policy
    -preservation philosophy
    -employee handbook
    -gift policy (development)
    -policy about political function rentals

    What else do we need?

We look forward to any help on this topic!

I see that you have a policy concerning political groups' use of your (FABULOUS!) structure... but what about a Facilities Use policy in general?  We are fortunate to not need outside users' rent money and as a department of a parent educational institution, we can refer people to other spaces on campus.

However, before I arrived, the museum was used for dozens of events each year which caused immeasurable damage to the building, and collections!

We are immensely fortunate to be able to say 'no' to people wanting  WEDDINGS in the museum.  I find these even more troublesome than political events, next are Chamber BAHs and Rotary wine tastings!

I've attached Norwich Free Academy's facilities use policy link.

Another huge gap I see in your list is a Governance Policy.  This would include the declaration of potential conflicts of interest....does the board evaluate itself?  How is the CEO evaluated? ... by whom?

    Good Luck.  Important stuff ...

It's certainly okay to keep one printed copy of these individual policies, for easy access, in a binder in the HR Director or Executive Director office, but most of these are uniquely individual/targeted and should not be incorporated in one document that is given to everyone (PT staff, FT staff, vols, BOD, etc.) as a full comprehensive, organizational manual.

    others...
    Anonymous Reporting Form
    Online Privacy Policy
    Youth Protection Policy
    Abuse and Molestation Policy
All of your various IRS 990/Audit required policies
    Credit Card Acceptance Policy
    Electronic Media Policy
    Document Retention
All of your Business Continuity Plan and Disaster Plan policies
    All of your IT policies
    Web Accessibility Policy
    Online Privacy Policy
... there are more, but I have to go to a meeting.

    Good luck.

    Hi,
I tried responding before but I don't think that my post made it.  Second try...
We have the kind of thing that you are looking for, I think.  It is on-line for public viewing here:
Parks Canada Guiding Principles and Operational Policies
    Pc remove preview
Parks Canada Guiding Principles and Operational Policies
Parks Canada - Guiding Principles and Operational Policies
    View this on Pc >

Please note that Part III is old;  I don't know why they haven't replaced it because the new version has been official for some years, now.  I am including it as an attachment.
    Happy Festivus...
