Presented by historian Heather Bruegl, AASLH Educators & Interpreters Steering Committee Member and Director of Education at Forge Project
What is blood quantum? Why do Native Americans have to keep track of it? What does it mean? And why are Natives Americans the only human group that must keep track of blood quantum? Blood quantum has been something that Native Americans have had to keep track of since colonization. This was a way for the United States government to limit citizenship. It has now been viewed as a slow genocide of the American Indian. We will explore this idea of blood quantum and what is has done to the individual Native American as well as what it has done to tribes and how it affects treaty rights.
