  • 1.  Online Exhibition Platforms

    Posted 03-04-2020 08:22 AM
    All,
I am exploring online exhibition platforms to display work we do not have space to in the physical museum. Does anyone have recommendations. I have been experimenting with Artsteps. https://www.artsteps.com/  Has anyone used this platform before? Looking for some resources.

    Thanks in advance

    Mark

Hi - We've been building a site using Omeka. Since we are an all-volunteer museum at this point, we needed something that had good templates (easy to build), good support (both supplier- and community-based), and low cost. At the same time, the user experience had to have a high-quality presentation, strong search, and easy navigation (intuitive). Lots of examples of Omeka presentations are available through their website links.

We decided to contract with Omeka.com to host it, which means we use the Omeka Classic platform without attempting to do custom programming.

Keep it simple. Creating content is enough of a challenge.

    Slight clarification:
omeka.org is the source of the software (free)
omeka.net is the contracted hosting service [not omeka.com]

Second Omeka. Though I personally did not create/use this, someone from my institution has, and the feedback has been positive:

Hi Greg - I am personally a big fan of Scalar - it's similar to Omeka but gives much more flexibility and opportunities to customize. I've used it to create 3 digital versions of our past exhibitions and it's been great.

Hi Mark, Jessica, George and Greg,
Since lots of folks are trying to move content to on-line platforms during the current museum closures, I started a thread about this over on NAME's facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/name.aam/10156792157106441/?comment_id=10156795312476441&notif_id=1585158377506152&notif_t=group_comment

Your ideas and experience there would add to our conversation -- thanks!
