    Does anyone use audio description for their media at their site? What kinds of receivers do you use and do you have a ballpark $ for the cost of purchasing these and/or a recommendation of how many we should have on hand?

    I'm not sure about doing it in house, but if you're looking to outsource, the Media Access Group at WGBH provides video descriptive services, (and captioning) for organizations around the US.

    The Caption Center
    Founded in 1972, The Caption Center was the world's first captioning agency -- pioneering access to television for viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Caption Center maintains an ongoing commitment to conducting outreach among viewers with hearing loss, those learning English as a second language, and people of all ages learning to read.

    Descriptive Video Service®
    Founded in 1990, DVS® pioneered access to television for viewers who are blind or who have low vision. The service provides descriptive narration of key visual elements, which is then inserted within the natural pauses in dialogue to help low-vision viewers to better understand the story. Key visual elements are those which viewers with vision loss would ordinarily miss and include actions, costumes, gestures, facial expressions, scene changes, and onscreen text.

    DVS descriptions are currently available on:
    • PBS stations nationwide
    • Turner Classic Movies cable network
    • selected series on the CBS, Fox, and Nickelodeon networks
    • feature films
    • large-format and IMAX films
    • a growing selection of DVDs

    Lynda, I attended a performance at the Public theater in NYC where descriptive devices were available. You could call them and ask for information. See you next month at the accessibility meetings?

    The number of devices you might need really depends on context, specifically based on your visitation and I would suggest a needs assessment to have a better idea for this specific project. When purchasing the devices I would recommend you think about how they can be leveraged for other uses as well to justify costs and ROI. Lastly, the prices of devices vary widely based on technology involved. Would these be tours conducted by a person? If so you would need a tour guide system with transceiver for guide and receivers for participants. I have seen these devices range in price from $3,000 to $9,000 for about 30 devices. You likely want to have double the amount of devices you need to plan for broken devices and repair time. The other option is to have a descriptive tour prerecorded and this can go onto wand devices that can also be leased rather than purchased or you could have a cloud based system that people even use their own mobile devices to access the tour. Again prices vary greatly.
