  • 1.  Museums with dedicated Interpretive functions

    Posted 03-21-2019 11:02 AM

I'm hoping to get a scope of work for any AAM institutions with dedicated Interpretive Depts.

    Thanks very much!

We have a fairly new Department of Interpretation. Three of us were pulled from Education and Programs and combined with three staff members from the Curatorial department in February of 2018. Our mission is to develop exhibits and programming at the same time so we can be Audience Focus and Collection Based. Basically we are the storytellers of the Museum.

Conner Prairie has a large and multifaceted Interpretation Department. We do first-person interp, third-person interp, and museum theatre.

Conner Prairie is also co-hosting with the Children's Museum of Indianapolis the annual conference of the International Museum Theatre Alliance (IMTAL). It is Aug 22-25, 2019 here in Indianapolis. Attendees are almost always part of a dedicated Interpretation/Education department. For more info, email me hughes@connerprairie.org.

It's nice to hear you are creating this department. We see interpretation used more with our nature center clients versus our museum clients. It's going to make your visitor experience even better. You might want to check out NAI  https://www.interpnet.com/

We also blog on it quite a bit and have this interpretive checklist that might be helpful https://www.taylorstudios.com/the-quick-easy-guide-for-awesome-interpretive-plans/

Most of our clients do it in combination with other tasks. A lot of our state park clients have dedicated staff for this. Feel free to reach out if you would like some connections in that realm.
