  • 1.  Gamification in Museums

    Posted 05-23-2019 10:31 AM
    Hello all,

I looking for people who have experience incorporating gamification principles into museum education programming.  I am embarking on this journey with one of our programs and want to know if others have ideas on benefits and drawbacks.  I am also testing the idea of incorporating an escape room into our host of offerings.

Any feedback, advice, or scholarship would be appreciated.

    Hi Peter,

Just the other day we began discussions of incorporating an escape room into our museum as well (on a temporary basis).  We haven't been able to really plan it out, yet, though so I'll be following along with earnest.

Hi Peter, we do that!  In fact, we won an AAM award 3 years ago for our gamification/education experience at the Discovery Cube centers in Los Angeles The Inspector Training Course.  And we are currently developing a game room for a client. The San Diego Natural History Museum has a successful Escape Room: "Botanic Panic - Escape The NAT"

    https://www.sdnhm.org/exhibitions/escape-the-nat/

"The world is threatened by a deadly viral outbreak. Diplomacy has failed, and now, the only thing that can save us... is science! Do you and your friends have what it takes to comb through clue-filled museum archives, solve puzzles, and save the world?

    Critical Components:
    • Compelling story that has a critical time limit
    • Step-by-step puzzle-solving and questioning lead to a capstone "reveal"
    • Limited technology, focuses on the "experience of things"
    • Leverages collection objects & themes
    • Requires a real person as host
    • Is fun
    • And most important, is a lot of fun

    Good Morning,

The National Archives has been creating escape room inspired programs for adults for the last 4 years and has created a middle school puzzle program we use with DC 8th graders as well.  The programs are very popular and engaging for both audiences.  Our programs are created in house by the education team.  Breakout EDU is a good place to get ideas for creating in house escape games.  There are also many great conferences like Games for Change and the Serious Play Conference for inspiration.  I'm happy to answer specific questions and share resources.

    Hello all,

I know Andrew Preble, the founder of Delaporte Ventures in New Orleans, and they have been working with the Audubon Institute to install an escape room inside of the Aquarium of the Americas (escape-extinction.com). They also designed the new lion exhibit at the Audubon Zoo to have a game where poachers can be tracked inside of the story-world of the exhibit (kulindanationalpark.com).   Another project is Escape My Room (https://escapemyroom.com/).  Perhaps you saw and/or experienced one of these during the 2019 AAM Annual Meeting?

Feel feel welcome to contact Andrew at apreble@escapemyroom.com, (985) 869-2343.   They generally aren't interested in any projects that are in places with less than 700k to 1 million visitors a year, but he's happy to chat with anyone about their ideas.

    Best wishes,
