I'm about to ask the most obvious question, and I'm sure it's been asked here before but I can't find it anywhere:

Besides Gaylord Brothers (great company but so expensive!), what recommendations do you museum veterans have for where to buy new glass cases? There aren't any used ones in our vicinity right now. Who have you bought from? What are my options?

    Thank you for any advice!

Is there a catalogue available - ALWAYS looking for other options!  I have used Gaylord and they have a GREAT quality but as stated - VERY expensive.

    Thanks

If you can build the base in-house, you can get custom vitrines fabricated at a plastics supply like Tap Plastics.  They will also pre-drill holes for security screw placement.  I like building mdf bases as they are very easy to paint out with the wall color for different exhibitions and let visitors focus on the objects rather than the "pretty" case.

I don't think you will be able to get much less expensive than the cases available in Gaylord. Unfortunately, for small museums and historical societies, artifact cases are expensive. Since they are not mass produced, they are fundamentally different from other products that we are used to pricing.

I notice that Gaylord carries the Frank showcase system. You should ask them about it. It is highly customizable and when your not using the bonnets they come apart and store flat.

    Hi Angie,

I really like the cases from Case[werks]. They are in Baltimore and Matt Malaquias is super nice and great to work with. Also, I've worked a lot with custom made cases from Exhibit Concepts in Dayton, OH. Jerry Spangler or Steven Lowry - also super nice guys could help you with the details.

Fantastic quality and service from both of them but I don't know how the price compares with Gaylord.

    Best,

Ian has really hit upon the salient point. Museum quality artifact cases (i.e. fabricated with conservation grade materials, tightly sealed, etc.) are typically custom and expensive to build. Our company specializes in just this kind of case and of course is always happy to talk with folks about their needs. See our work at www.artifaccases.com. If cost is the driving factor the alternative is to purchase stock merchandising showcases any number of which may be found by searching for “display cases” on line.

I just went through several months of searching for quality multi-function modular and standalone cases here at our house museum and ended up going with the Meyvaert Infinity case.  The other cases that we looked at were Zone Display Cases (Quebec), Goppion (Italy & Massachusetts), and Glasbau-Hahn HLS System case (Germany).  I know about the Frank cases (German) distributed by Gaylord (but I did not like them because of lacking a desiccant tray and are not glass) as well.   I reached out to each via their websites.  Happy to talk offline if it would help you.
