  • 1.  Inspiration Needed: Avatar Use in Exhibits

    Posted 02-07-2017 02:25 PM
    Hi All,

We're looking for case studies where visitors can choose their own avatars* to interact with their physical space or through a tracking device. Anything that has been done related to this would be great. It does not need to be solely in museum settings, but also themed attractions, video games, etc.

*avatar = an icon or figure representing a particular person or character onscreen.

The Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland, CA uses avatars in their Bill Nye Climate Lab exhibit. Also, at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science we kind of use avatars in Expedition Health. The visitors are given a scanner card and choose a character, or buddy, (there are several people that were pre-filmed), and at each interactive station the visitor learns more about their buddy's experience as it relates to the different activities. Bill Nye's Climate Lab Exhibit | Chabot Space & Science Center | East Bay Area - Oakland CA

Modern civilization has given the Earth a bit of a fever, and it'll take more than acetaminophen to break it. Let Bill Nye the "Climate Guy" show you how to CURE an over-warm planet, TAME MONSTER STORMS, detox the oceans and keep continental ice sheets where they belong - on continents!

    Thanks very much Amber!

Have you seen any avatars that are more integrated with environment rather than in a screen? A little tricky to explain, but I'm also trying to look for more immersive experiences.

“The Speaking Celt” app is a companion app to visitors of the Museum of Celtic Heritage in Salzburg.

Serving as a museum guide, the augmented celt appears every time users scan the targets.

The celt tells stories about his way of living, explains elements of the museum and engage with visitors in an interactive way.

Once the day is over, an augmented celt makes sure to ‘guard’ the museum day and night, protecting all the treasures inside the building.

Hi Tiffany, thanks for your response! At the moment I can't think of any additional examples of exhibits using avatars. Can you describe in a bit more detail exactly what it is you're looking for?
