  • 1.  Needed: Repairer of Items Damaged in Shipment

    Posted 12-19-2016 04:38 PM

Our collection/museum has received a shipment of donated items, and several were damaged in shipment.  Do any of you have in-house or contracted services that we can consider?

    Specifics:

    1. Items - Antique scales of various types (e.g., postal scales, egg scales, coin scales, etc.)
    2. Materials - Primarily brass; some items/parts could be iron, agate (bearings), inlaid stone, glass, paint/pinstripe
    3. Quantity - Estimate 15-20 (not everything has been inventoried and inspected at this time)
    4. Location - Items are in Pittsburgh and we have people who will transport them to areas like Philadelphia, Chicago, Ohio, Michigan, New York, and other eastern states

Photos will be available to anyone under consideration.

We are looking for experience with these types of items and materials, with repairs at a good quality and fair price. This is a claim that the transporter is covering.

    Hello:

It's not clear what kind of "items" need repair.  In New York, in my experience (as both a curator and a gallerist), the best conservator or repairer for paintings is Dana Cranmer; for photographs, A Better Image; and for other works on paper (drawings, prints, watercolors, et al), Paper Conservation Inc.  All have websites or are easily accessible online.

But if you need to find someone closer to Phoenix, I'd suggest that if it's for photographs, you contact the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona and ask there for a referral; if for paintings or works on paper, I'd call perhaps Pinnacle West Capital Corporation in Phoenix, which has an outstanding collection of American Modernist artworks (early to mid-20th century) and thus has probably had good repair experience; or you might try the Raymond Jonson Center in Albuquerque, NM.  best of luck.  I'm sorry it happened.

    Thank you, Mara Jayne.

The original posting, with the items in Pittsburgh, listed:

    1. Items - Antique scales of various types (e.g., postal scales, egg scales, coin scales, etc.)
    2. Materials - Primarily brass; some items/parts could be iron, agate (bearings), inlaid stone, glass, paint/pinstripe

However, some of the responses from different parts of the country did not specify what they might be looking to repair.  Since this AAM blog is so widely read, I'm sure your suggestions will be of value to several members of Museum Junction.

Please consider consulting with a peer-reviewed member of the American Institute for Conservation.  Learn more at:  www.conservation-us.org.  You can Find at Conservator by clicking on the link on the homepage.  This tool allows searches by location and type of material.  On the site, you can learn about conservation training and how to work with a conservator, in addition to accessing a variety of resources on the care of cultural heritage.
