Has anyone else had experience with an airport as a community outreach venue? It occurred to me In the process of installing an exhibition of my own paintings,  Dep(art)ing Passengers,  for four months  at the Fort Smith Regional Airport, Fort Smith, Arkansas., that airports are perhaps an overlooked venue for art museum community outreach.  Fort Smith as a city has a population of 88,133 (2016) yet the airport has an annual enplanement of 89,582 (2017) plus an unknown but large number of  people who drop off and pick up passengers. 30,000 people in a four month period is more foot traffic than many museums (art and otherwise) experience in comparable sized cities. What experiences have museums had with airports as a venue?

The Slater Museum does this with a local, small airport - we use our colorful, image-laden large (4'X8' +-) temporary exhibitions text panels - NOT objects.  The panels would end up in storage - ugh - in the trash, so it's a great use for them post-exhibition.

The St. Louis airport has a gallery specifically for exhibits. They've worked with lots of local and regional museums.

I suggest getting in touch with Mary Tinti (she's currently with the Fitchburg Art Museum). She has studied public art in airports, and might be able to provide some resources.

    Hi Charles,

The Denver International Airport has a successful exhibit program. They have exhibits from their own collection as well as guest exhibits from collections around the Denver Metro area. You can check it out here:

There are a number of airport museums across the country.   While many focus on aviation history, at least two provide amazing community art experiences:

Though not an art exhibit, Luci Creative developed an exhibit for Chicago's O'Hare Airport called "Fly Green Chicago" which provides visitors information about Chicago's environmental goals for transportation, waste management, energy use, etc. Here's a link to some photos:

I am not sure if you would consider Pittsburgh a large city, but check out their displays and programming at the airport.

People usually have an extra 45 minutes or more at an airport so I really support your idea.

    David,

Thanks for sharing. Art and nature definitely blend well together in many environments. The interior design trend of moving from waterfalls within locations to a placing a living wall within the San Francisco's SMOMA.

Thank you all for your responses. BUT except for the Slater activity, all of the airports referenced are large city airports like St. Louis, Denver, San Francisco, etc.  The most important point I wanted to make is that the smaller regional airports should not be overlooked by artists or museums. Again, Fort Smith Regional Airport hosts 86,000 enplanements per year plus people dropping off or picking up passengers. My show which is located adjacent to the airport security checkpoint is up for four months including over Thanksgiving and Xmas holidays, meaning that 30,000 people will pass through the exhibition. How many small or middle sized museums or galleries can say that they get 30,000 visitors in a four month period?

The Quad Cities International Airport in Iowa has a small art gallery within the airport, "Art @ the Airport".  Quad City Arts in a nonprofit arts agency that organizes the shows there. The website says almost 1 million passengers go through there annually but I'm not sure how they calculate that. Here's the website and their director's contact info if you wanted to discuss further: quadcityarts | art @ the airport

The Wilkes Barre/Scranton International Airport (AVP) recently partnered with the International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art (www.icccia.com) for Iron Maidens II: Made in Wales, one of their many exhibitions  during the 2018 conference at Scranton Furnaces.  Most were held in academic galleries, pop-ups, and independently owned galleries.  In another unexpected pairing, ICCCIA joined the Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society (Erie Lackawanna Dining Car Preservation Society )  to run a special excursion train, the Ferrous Flyer, with performances at two of the stops and a night iron pour at the destination.  AVP is far from being a major metropolitan airport but it has a committed and well run arts program.

San Francisco Airport always has wonderfully curated museum exhibitions in many areas of the airport. I've enjoyed their exhibits for years! I do not know who is responsible for the exhibits, but I bet you can google this and find out. SFO.com?
