  • 1.  Covid in Museums - Is Anyone Collecting Data?

    Posted 10-06-2020 07:41 PM
In Los Angeles County, Museums are still unable to open while retail, indoor shopping malls, barber shops and nail salons are open with modifications that the museum sector has already demonstrated it can meet. Is there anyone collecting (non-personal) data on covid-related museum incidents, or hopefully the lack of them, that can be shared? I am sure this information will be of interest to any closed museums advocating for safe re-openings. Thank you.

I would like to learn about this as well.  An academic museum, we are allowed to have student groups in, but not the public!  This is particularly frustrating since our non-student demographic is among the high-risk for COVID folk, who are also most likely to follow the rules and be careful!  Thank you!

Julie, Membership Consultants is collecting Covid-19 related information from museums and cultural institutions of all types nationally.  While we are doing this from a membership based perspective, it still nonetheless has information on how the pandemic has affected museum operations and what people are doing to reopen, how staffing levels have been affected, etc.
For instance, we know that 94% of the institutions surveyed did have a closure period, when they reopened, and that about 10% are still closed.  Here is a link for you to download and view those results from our monthly survey from May through September.

With your help and participation, we have collected data from membership programs like yours. We recently asked many of you to participate in a Covid-19 Membership Impact survey.

Thanks for posting this Julie. I was just having this conversation with our Chamber. Museums in my county are still not able to open, while gyms were just given the green light to open with limitations and restrictions that we are ready to implement as well.

If anyone is collecting data on occurrences of COVID-19 related to transmission in museums and can share, that would be hugely helpful. I know it's really difficult to get such info, from a privacy perspective and a causal perspective, but I'm hoping there's some data that can help us make a stronger case to our state government.

    Thanks,

    Keni
