  • 1.  Surveying Staff for IPM

    Posted 04-09-2019 01:26 PM
    Hi again, y'all!

So a staff member at my museum gave a great suggestion of sending out a survey to museum employees to assess what will and won't be sustainable for staff input in IPM.  I'm not sure what questions to ask though.

What I'm mainly interested in is two-fold: what do staff need to be trained on (or put another way, what do they already know and abide by with IPM) and how can I structure IPM policy and procedure to ensure the most compliance from staff.  I've started creating buy-in over the months, so now I want to take it a step further and assess how to most effectively involve all staff in IPM efforts.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Catherine,

I've found that IPM education is an ongoing process. There's always staff turnover and people come from so many different experiences that some will be quite knowledgeable about pest management issues and others will never have heard about it. I think a survey will only give you a current snapshot that could likely change rapidly with changes in staff, but perhaps that can also be part of your education process.

My recommendation would be to first put together the points that are non-negotiable. No food in the collections storage areas, for example. Regular maintenance of spaces and removal of trash, etc. Then evaluate those; what is already being done and what needs to be improved with those non-negotiable points?

To be most effective, IPM requires all staff at the museum to work together. Educate, regularly, and try to make it fun. I send out pest of the month fliers, featuring different pests that present problems for our scientific collections and archives, health problems for our live animals and have addressed ones that present problems for staff and visitors, and horticultural pests as we have live plants for our butterfly haven and exhibit grounds.

Having an IPM committee also helps ensure collaboration. Which staff/positions would benefit from being involved? These people will ultimately help support an institutional program if it is done collaboratively.

I agree heartily with everything Dawn wrote. The Field Museum has a Pest Committee that has adopted IPM wherever possible in accordance with LEED O+M standards. As the collections are the foundation of our institution and integral to our mission, the committee has staff from Facilities, Finance, Exhibitions, Conservation, Zoology, Housekeeping, Special Events, Restaurant Operations, Guest Relations, a biological IPM specialist, etc., meets monthly, and also pulls in staff from other areas as needed.

We send out regular surveys per the LEED O+M system, but the committee is also known as a good vetting group for initiatives and proposals that extend into multiple spaces and facets of our operations.

I'm very interested in the survey & looking forward to seeing it, thanks for the great discussion prompt.

Angela, I think Tracy Lawlor at JGL consultants would provide what you need to know.  To there extent she cannot help, give me a call and I will try to help.

    Lisa,

That's excellent news!  Is there an ETA for this survey?

    Thanks,

Thank you all for your input and suggestions.  I have a few new ideas now and am awaiting that survey!  IPM has been surprisingly difficult to establish, and I think it's really going to boil down to continuing education and taking into account the feedback I receive from staff.

    Cheers!
