  • 1.  Experiment: Blood pressure and viewing art

    Posted 04-08-2019 01:41 PM
My gallery is located in a senior care facility and I'm always looking to host educational events in conjunction with the exhibitions.  I thought pairing free blood pressure screenings with visits to the gallery could be an interesting community experiment.  Does anyone have articles that discuss the correlation between blood pressure and art?  Have suggestions how on who to collaborate with (American Hearth Association)?  Foresee major repercussions of this pairing?  Thanks in advance.

I know that art making helps cortisol levels (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/06/160615134946.htm), but I know that the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts also has claimed that art viewing helps with it too (https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/doctors-can-soon-prescribe-visits-to-montreal-museum-of-fine-arts).

There are articles out there about MSBR Mindfulness-based stress reduction. We have been hosting Mindful Looking and mindfulness practice sessions at our museum.

You could easily use heartrate monitors and apps to measure before and after a session.

Quite similar to the research being done in health geography with, for example, portable EEG machines for green and blue space research. Monitoring changing stress and anxiety levels with transitions from calmer to more congested or busier environments.

    The paper entitled:
Curating Care: The Design and Feasibility of a Partnership Between an Art Museum and an Academic Pain Center
by Ian J. Koebner Scott M. Fishman Debora Paterniti Doris Sommer Deborah Ward Jill G. Joseph
was published in Curator: The Museum Journal on: 10 August 2018 https://doi.org/10.1111/cura.12271
It outlines the parameters of exactly these questions.
