  • 1.  Animation cel display cases

    Hello –

I am looking for information on how best to display animation cels.  We have a small collation of cels, nineteen ranging in date from 1936-1941, which originally hung in a side hallway of the main house.  As the family and staff used this entrance the most when the home was occupied, the cels were exposed to a large amount of fluctuating temperatures and humidity.  Now that the home is a museum, this door and hall are still the exit for all tours.  I am hoping to find a way to create an exhibit case that can be placed within one of the more interior rooms of the home to display a few of the cels at a time.

The home is air conditioned but being in New Orleans our high humidity has caused problems over the years and I want to minimize that as much as possible.  Does anyone else have any animation cels on view in their historic house and if so, how do you display and maintain them?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
    Lenora

    Hi Lenora,

Consider contacting a conservator to help you evaluate the collection. You may have nitrate film, which poses a safety hazard. Nitrate films were used in animation cells up to 1942, according to this Getty study: Animation Cels: Preserving a Portion of Cinematic History (Article).

Cinema has been enriched by stories and characters brought to life in animated films, which evoke memories and emotions of our past and are time capsules of the prevailing attitudes of their eras. Although animation today is ubiquitous, it has a relatively brief history.
