You might consider using polycarbonate (Lexan, Tuffak, to name two) or impact-resistant acrylic, instead of regular acrylic. Regular acrylic is a little too easy to break, and that is a huge area to protect with one sheet, even if it's thick. When acrylic breaks, it makes nice, sharp-edged fragments that don't get along well with paintings.
There are fewer fabrication options with polycarbonate, as there really is only one solvent that works on it, so it may be harder to find a fabricator, but it is very hard to break. Impact-resistant acrylic is almost as good, though more expensive than polycarbonate. Sadly, both are more expensive than regular acrylic, but at least you won't have to worry about needing to do a thorough re-restoration!

Subject: Source for large wall mounted plexiglass barrier
Hi All,
We have recently restored a large painting and plan to rehang it in a more prominent space than its previous location. We need to protect the painting as it will be a in a much more accessible location. We are looking at installing a wall mounted plexiglass sheet that covers the whole of the painting. The painting is large (roughly 4.5 feet x 9 feet x 8 inches). If anyone has suggestions for where we might source this would be hugely appreciated.
Best,
Keni
