  • 1.  Puerto Rican Museums?

    Posted 10-02-2017 05:18 PM

The ongoing humanitarian crisis remains devastating, but as diesel and supplies begin to be distributed, I wondered whether anyone has heard anything from colleagues in PR at the various museums? Is there anything that we can do?

    Thank you for your consideration.

ICOM ICEE was planning to have their annual conference in Puerto Rico but it has, obviously, been cancelled.  In the coming days, the ICEE Board will be activating initiatives with their conference partners and sponsors to raise funds to support colleagues at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico and other institutions across the island that have worked tirelessly with the ICEE Board over the past several months to plan the 2017 conference.

The ICEE Board intends to host a fundraising link on our conference website for any ICEE member or ICOM colleague that would like to make a donation. The ICEE also intends to make a donation from their regular budget.

I believe ICOM and Blue Shield are also liaising with the relevant authorities / gathering relevant information.

    Hi All

The Smithsonian working directly with its Affiliate museums in Puerto Rico and is assisting the Museum of Art Puerto Rico. Their collections were not damaged in the hurricane, but loss of power and high humidity is having an impact. AAM is a member of the Heritage Emergency National Task Force and together we are working to collect damage information in collaboration with colleagues in PR and the USVI. ICOM is similarly working to collect information across the Caribbean and gather resources to assist if requested.

We have been in touch with the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in San Juan, because they are a client of our firm.  The Museo building  sustained only minor damage, plus some reparable damage to the beautiful botanical garden and the plaza in front.  The collection is safely stored, and they received emergency funding from NEH and the Smithsonian, so have been able to buy fuel for their massive generator.  The Museo has the only conservation lab on the Island, and they are providing safe care for not only their collection but also for masterpieces from the Institute in San Juan and from other collections, including churches.  However the Museo is closed and there is no regular power.  The staff is safe.

Hi Victoria, Chicago is the home of the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture, they have a donation page & are helping channel resources here: http://nmprac.org/support/

Many people in that community are busy trying to help resettle extended family and friends to Chicago, I am sure any support is greatly appreciated and will be put to good use.

The article in Spanish bellow is from el Nuevo Día (main island newspaper). It states that the museums under the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña are relatively secure state. The buildings are in ok conditions though some lost arched windows. The journalist does seem to be aware of the damage heat and humidity can cause now there is now power for air-conditioning.
I have communicated with some staff members at El Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (not an ICP museum) and they appear to be fine. I have designed for them. Then again the humidity and heat are an issue. Very close by there is a hospital so hopefully they power will be back on soon.

This is not the end of it though. The country is bankrupt and with the GDP dropping everyday the budgetary impact will be drastic in the coming year.
