If you work at, went to, or know of an UNDERGRADUATE college or university that offers a single course, certificate, minor, or major in museum studies, curatorial studies, museography, public history, interpretation, historic preservation, management, or anything else related to the collection, preservation, interpretation of natural or cultural heritage, or the history or theory of "museums" (defined broadly) and society, please contact me off-list with the institution's name and the course or courses of study. We're compiling a list.

And yes, I am aware of AAM's Directory of Museum Studies and Related Programs.

    Thanks,

    Dan

A friend of mine graduated from Hartwick College and was part of an undergrad museum studies program. I just looked it up, and it appears that what they offer is a museum studies minor. http://www.hartwick.edu/academics/majors-and-minors/museum-studies/

    Museum Studies

    Hello everyone,

I did reply off-line but will add information about Michigan State University's Museum Studies Program here. We have an undergraduate minor and a graduate certificate. In addition, museum studies is one of three tracks that students can choose in the new MA in Arts and Cultural Management . This is the second year of the MA program. Information about museum studies can be found at http://museumstudies.msu.edu/.

    Dear colleagues,

It's been great reading about the museum-related courses/offerings at other institutions so I am posting to the list as well.

At Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, museum studies courses are offered through the Department of Art/Art History. (An Arts Administration course is also offered through the Department of Music.) We do not offer a major or minor, nor a concentration, in museum studies but students can choose to focus an Art History minor in museum studies by taking the museum studies courses I teach. These include:
    • ARTH 230: Introduction to Museum Studies
    • ARTH 334: Exhibiting Africa
    • ARTH 398: Museum Controversies
    • ARTH 335: Exhibition Design
I've also taught first-year seminars, senior seminars, and independent studies focused on museum studies and/or cultural heritage, including among others: Museums in the Digital Age; Collections Management; the Art of Collecting; and Gift or Loot?: Who Controls Cultural Property.

Art History majors are required to take a museum studies course. (In addition to my museum studies courses, several colleagues occasionally teach courses that fulfill this requirement, usually through a curatorial component in Wheaton's Beard & Weil Galleries.)

Other students have the option of taking museum studies courses to fulfill requirements for the: Art History minor; Studio Art major and minor; Film & New Media Studies major; and Business & Management major.

Dan, if you are willing to share the list you're compiling, I suspect you'd have a receptive audience through the listserv.

    Best,
    Leah

At Vassar College there is one undergraduate Museum Studies course taught each spring. It  used to be taught by our museum Director but is now taught by our Dutch Art Professor. It covers the very basics of museum practices and there are visits to the museum and discussions with the staff throughout the semester. The students, mostly Art History and studio Art majors, help organize a small exhibition in our project gallery as the culmination of the course. There is a high demand for this course, and I think if they added a more advanced museum class, it would fill up quickly but there are no plans to add any more classes.

    Good morning,

When I attended the University of Hartford for my undergrad, I took a summer course called, "Museum Studies." I looked on their spring 2017 course catalog and they are now offering a similar course called, "Museum and Exhibition Practices" for 3 credits. I attached an image of the course description, hopefully it it clear enough to read.

We will soon have approval for our Art History/ Museum Studies Associate in Arts degree, too. I am looking forward to seeing the compiled list!

When I attended the University of New Hampshire in the early 2000's I took a basic Museum Studies class and did a for-credit internship at a local museum as an undergrad.  I believe these courses may have also been graduate courses that were open with permission to undergrads.

At my undergrad at UC Berkeley I took a course under ESPM titled Natural History Museums and Biodiversity Science. After touring all of the natural history museums on campus we picked a project and conducted research outside of class with a few class sessions devoted to this project. We also learned how to use the database ARCTOS, used with the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, a skill currently helpful in my graduate Museum Studies Program at CU Boulder. The class culminated in a day of presentations that represented what our project is and how it is important to the collections we worked in.

    I hope this helps.
