Hello everyone, our museum has spent the last year conducting a thorough assessment of how we perform on various dimensions of diversity, equity, access, and inclusion. As one of the outcomes, we are creating an "IDEA Council" to institutionalize these conversations and serve as a body to surface, prioritize, and make recommendations on policy and action that will improve our practice.

As we prepare to launch, it would be helpful for us to learn from other organizations that have put similar groups in place. Please let me know if you would be willing to discuss your strategies with our co-chairs via a short phone call or email conversation. Also, if you have examples to recommend from other institutions, that would be most helpful too. Thank you!

Minneapolis Institute of Art has made good strides in the area of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA). They have developed clear and cogent statements related to DEIA that are listed on their website Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Policy -- Minneapolis Institute of Art  and they have received grants to fund positions to focus on DEIA

I would be pleased to discuss how institutions can use/have used the LGBTQ Alliance Welcoming Guidelines as an aid for staff teams developing IDEA self-studies.  Congratulations on moving forward with IDEA planning and implementation.

    Hi Michelle,

I would be happy to be part of a call to hear what others are doing and to share some of what I have learned so far in my short time at Minneapolis Institute of Art as the Diversity & Inclusion Manager (newly created position.)

I like the wording of the outcome you list for the IDEA Council. We have a similar group that has been in existence a couple years.

So pleased to see this discussion here! Here at Arab American National Museum we have an active staff Equity + Justice Committee and are preparing to publish and publicize our policies on this topic. I will be looking at the links offered here, and I'm happy to share any info if needed.

    Hi, Michelle-

The Corning Museum of Glass began undertaking similar work a few years ago and recently conducted an Equity Audit which sounds similar to your assessment. I'd be happy to share information about how our group is structured/operates, and would love to learn about what your museum and others are doing.

    Best,

    Alexandra
