I was wondering if any other museums out there lease/rent out extra office space in their museums or buildings owned by the museum to another agency? Whether it is an agency within the same type of work or not.

Thank you for any and all feedback.

Carnegie Hall rents space. So does Fort Mason in San Francisco. Not quite what you're looking for but it's a start.

Thanks, Susan. Brandi was thinking less about "one-off" facility rentals and more about long-term leases. For example, if an organization has historic properties that it can't staff and keep open to the public maybe they are leased to another not-for-profit - or even a for-profit? Gertrudes at the DBG is indeed a good example as is Cafe a la Carte at the Tucson Museum of Art. Other examples that have been cited are leasing on a weekly basis to a church congregation or maybe extra office space to a start-up or another not-for-profit. All examples welcome. We're trying to compile as diverse a list as possible.

Brandi and James: Here are two ideas from Ohio. The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center leased the 4th floor of it's building to a non-profit for about a year. It was always intended as a short-term lease, up to 18 months. I don't remember the non-profit but it's mission did align with NURFC. It was done for revenue purpose and did not impact the museum.

I know that the Ohio History Connection has agreements with local non-profits to manage some of it's sites. In Cincinnati, the Harriett Beecher Stowe House is owned by Ohio History Connection but managed by a local group. This is true for several sites, e.g. Serpent Mound site is managed by Arc of Appalachia among several others.

    Cheers,
    Jane

Fort Mason in San Francisco is a military base that has been repurposed. Fort Mason hosts nearly two dozen nonprofit and arts organizations as permanent residents. Current residents include Magic Theatre, City College's Fort Mason Art Campus, BATS Improv, the SFMOMA Artists Gallery and a restaurant https://fortmason.org/

Carnegie Hall had 100 studios added to it shortly after it was built and was noted as longtime live/work space of fashion photographer Bill Cunningham and many other artists. The final tenants were forced out in the aughts to make room for the Carnegie's own educational programming in the Judith and Burton Resnick Education Wing.

Chester County Historical Society has office space on its third floor that has been rented for numerous years, all for-profit. The renters have included: advertising agency, tech company (both outgrew the space), and currently a homeopathic doctor. All were excellent at respecting the space and generally nice people.

Another arrangement is that a corner of the museum shop is used by a custom stationery vendor. Part of the arrangement is that she volunteers a specified number of hours in the museum shop. This is a value-added situation for those people renting our auditorium for wedding receptions and other occasions. She can handle any stationery needs, if anyone is interested. This is by no means a requirement. She is actively involved in the local event planning circles so it works both ways, attracting business to CCHS. She subsequently became a part-time CCHS employee who handles the building rentals.
