We will be piloting the use of interpretive paddles as a means of augmenting costumed interpretation in a farm site, military encampment, and church. We'd explored the use of shin-height signage but are thinking that hand-held paddles with info may be the way to go. If you have thoughts or experiences to share, we'd appreciate your insights.

Can you explain a little bit more about how the paddles will be used? Will they be held by the costumed interpreters? Handed to guests? Who is the target audience for the paddles? Adults? Children (what age)? Multi-generational families? Have you asked your visitors what kind of augmented experience they would like? What's the role of the interpreter when interacting with guests? What kinds of conversations are they having?

Interpretive paddles will be used in areas not stationed by staff. We have more space than interpreters so boxes with informational paddles will be made available at entry points to, say, the gardens. Visitors pick them up use the info printed on them to explore the gardens then put them back in the box when they leave.

Visitors prefer live interpretation but we are spread thin and are exploring the use of paddles, piped in audio, and phone apps with augmented reality. We're looking for folks who have had experience with these options to get some lessons learned.
