  • 1.  Member Retention - Suggestions Needed

    Posted 08-03-2016 04:48 PM

Hi everyone - Our museum has noticed that - while we have a steady stream of new members every year - our membership retention rates are declining. We are working to re-evaluate our programming but also want to re-evaluate the way we notify members about renewals.

Any suggestions out there on ways to improve member retention? We currently send out renewal letters on the month that someone is going to expire (roughly 30 days in advance). Some have suggested adding reminder notifications 90 or 60 days in advance. Has anyone had positive experiences when switching to more advanced notice? Also, any suggestions on emails vs. letters? We are a small museum with a small staff so we want to be sure to use resources wisely.

In that same vein - we are trying to determine if annual fund donors at a certain level should automatically receive memberships. Experiences on that welcome as well. Thank you!

    Stephanie,

We send out a mass email the first of the month. It goes to those that have expired in the last three months and those that are expiring in the next three months. In the email there is a link to take them to our renewal page online. We also offer an early renewal incentive, if they renew at their current level or above before their expiration date they receive one month free!

I also send out letters, since not everyone has email, to those expiring the next month, also every three months I send out letters to those that have expired the last three months.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
