  • 1.  displaying Chinese silk scrolls

    Hello,

I'm looking for low cost methods for displaying Chinese silk scrolls. We have several scrolls that were received as gifts and they have low monetary value. We display them on campus in various administrative and academic buildings.

The scrolls have a horizontal orientation and some of them are 6 to 10 feet long. When we secure them on the sides, they tend to sag in the middle. Due to the low value of the artwork, we do not want to frame them. (The framing would exceed their value).

A colleague/art professor suggested that we obtain a piece of plywood and cover with fabric and then mount the scrolls to the wood. He suggested that we use pins at the top of the scroll to keep it flat (but not put the pin directly through the fabric, instead using the pin head to apply pressure to the fabric). I've never seen this done before. I suggested concealed wood dowel/rod like you would for hanging a quilt and he said this is typically not done for Chinese scrolls.

I'm seeking other solutions. Thanks in advance for your advice.

It sounds like you are talking about hand scrolls and not hanging scrolls which would normally be exhibited in a flat case and not hung.  ....unless I am not understanding your post.

    Hi Kristen,

You could use strips of acrylic secured at the top and bottom of the scrolls against a panel to apply more even pressure and support. Feel free to contact me if you need any help. Suzanne@McGarraugh.com

Another option would be to cut a piece of acid-free foam core to just the size of the scroll or about 1/8 inch less and run a piece of adhesive velcro along the top of the foam core. Then using NON-adhesive opposite Velcro, either a line or a series of dots, stitch it carefully to the top back of the scroll. Carefully mount the scroll to the foam core, pressing the Velcro tabs to that on the foam-core backer, and whammo, you're good to go. The foam core can then be Velcro'd to the wall or you can add a hanger. Just make sure that your foam core cuts are clean and it "disappears" behind the scroll. I've done this with flags and it's worked very well.
